Using art to leverage literacy concepts and skills
When rich visual images drive children's stories, it transforms their writing in many powerful ways.
By being introduced to various simple art materials and methods from the very start, young authors/illustrators have access to visual, kinesthetic, and verbal modes of thinking.
Under our commitment to deliver a reading program based on research and evidence instructional strategies. We have over 18 years of experience working with children and families from diverse cultural, ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds and over 15 years in curriculum development and implementation. Testing strategies to improve literacy outcomes of Non-English-speaking students and low-income children at risk of academic failure. These experiences have shown that reading daily at a very young age significantly impacts a child’s academic success.
Research has underscored the importance of quality instruction in reading basics: phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, orthographic (the rules of spelling and writing), and comprehension. When children get started with the basics, they become engaged and read quickly enough to make reading effortless and fun. Children as young as beginning kindergarten — if not earlier — should be screened to determine their level of risk for reading difficulties, and research-based reading programs should be incorporated into the elementary school curriculum.
Research shows that children who hear and are exposed to more and richer language are given the best chances to succeed academically and develop better language skills (Fernald, Marchman, & Weissleder, 2013). Sharing books and reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills, it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory (Bardige, 2009). To foster language and literacy development, children need to experience a variety of interactions, relationships, activities and play.
Research shows that the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for success in reading is when parents are involved in reading aloud to their children. Working in a joint goal with parents to increase and improve their children's literacy skills and to develop a love of reading at a very early age. We design, develop and implement a family literacy plan, establishing a dedicated space at home, a “Book Nook” a comfortable, tiny spot where a child can be in a more peaceful, contemplative place mentally and physically. A very personal, friendly environment, with a process and practices linguistically and culturally sensible, to enjoy reading for pleasure.
A lifelong love of reading starts at home. The ability to read is one of the precious abilities a person can give a child. But getting a child excited about reading can be a much harder task. With technology being practically omnipresent in our lives, children always expect to play video games or watch videos online. Encouraging the reading habit, reading for pleasure has a dramatic impact on educational outcomes, wellbeing, and social mobility, and is also an immense pleasure. Our principal goal is to facilitate resources and support parents to help develop a love of reading in every child because we know that reading can transform lives
